Talk About Disorganized: BC Student Aid Cuts

Talk about disorganized.
Yes, the word "sneaky" has been used by one commentator. But as "sneaky" goes, this still seems disorganized.
Let's start at the beginning.
As Debt 101 users heard earlier, 6 BC student aid programs got cut very quietly this summer.
Officials with BC's Ministry of Advanced Education say these programs were either cut or frozen back in June. This was apparently just part of a government-wide costs-savings initiative that began soon after the BC government won re-election.
Okay, so if the programs ended in June, why these results when we fast-forward a month?

  • As of late July, these student aid cuts did not seem posted on government website "news" pages.
  • As of late July, most cancelled programs remained advertised on government websites.
  • StudentAid BC call centre staff (which advises people with BC Student Loans) say they were only told of the cuts in mid-July. They also say they were not told that the Permanent Disabilities Program had in fact been reinstated until July 31.

Truly remarkable. In 10 years of covering the legendary confusion of student loans in Canada, I have never seen student loan aid programs cut - or communicated - in such a chaotic way.
