Political Pressure Pays?
Remember when I reported Manitoba’s latest cut in student loan interest rates?
Guess I’m still thinking about it. Because I'm wondering how much of a role student lobbying played in that rate-cut.
Which of course, to students is best described in another word spelled m-o-n-e-y.
To be honest, I don’t swing by Manitoba much. And I don’t know what led Manitoba’s provincial government to make its latest rate cuts. Usually, the economy, elections and a government’s political values weigh heavily on these kinds of decisions.
But political pressure can certainly speed things along.
And, for years, Manitoba’s branch of the Canadian Federation of Students has lobbied for interest rates (plus other changes).
Back in February, 2008, CFSMB released a detailed report called First Aid for Student Aid.
In the five years since, successive rate cuts have made Manitoba student loans cheaper than average.
If you’re familiar with Manitoba, maybe you check that report to see if any other CFSMB recommendations were followed by improvements.
